Happy Spring Time, Happy Easter Bunny Time, and Happy Day Light Savings Time!
And
Happy Birthday to me! Yup, this month I turn the decade calendar over to 7! And I feel great, and excited because I am offering you something for your belly.
You know our belly is a very important part of us because it is the home of our second brain – our gut brain. You may have heard a bit about your gut brain. John Hopkins Medicine wrote an article about your “second brain” and its connection to anxiety, stress and digestive disease. https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/healthy_aging/healthy_body/the-brain-gut-connection
“The ENS (enteric nervous system) may trigger big emotional shifts experienced by people coping with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and functional bowel problems such as constipation, diarrhea, bloating, pain and stomach upset. “For decades, researchers and doctors thought that anxiety and depression contributed to these problems. But our studies and others show that it may also be the other way around,” Dr. Jay Pasricha (director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Neurogastroenterolgoy) says. Researchers are finding evidence that irritation in the gastrointestinal system may send signals to the central nervous system (CNS) that trigger mood changes.”
So, although we need our second brain, it, unfortunately, may cause many of us to suffer from digestive issues such as:
- Diarrhea and/or constipation – which may include having to run to the bathroom at inconvenient times
- Gut pain – doubling over with spasms
- Bloating and gas
These symptoms are often referred to as:
- IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)
- Spastic Colon
- Nervous Stomach
- Irritable Stomach
- Rotten Gut
The problem is – there is no known cure – until now.
