You’re probably wondering why a hypnotherapist is recommending a movie on Netflix. Well, it’s actually because it is a great example of Regression Therapy.
The Adam Project is not just about time travel, it’s about coming to terms with the stories we tell ourselves. So many of us create stories about our childhoods filled with pain and loss. We make up narratives about why our parents were absent in our lives, about why we were bullied in school, about why our parents got divorced, etc. Many of us really dislike who we were as children. Like the character in the film, we can spend our entire lives trying to outrun the image we have of our younger selves.
Adam, played by Ryan Reynolds as an adult and Walker Scobell as a child, deals with many of these traumas. His father dies tragically while he is young and even though he misses him terribly, he makes up a story in his mind that because his dad worked so much, he must not have loved him anyway. This story helps him avoid the pain of sadness by resorting to anger. He also hates the memory of his younger self who always got bullied, was misunderstood, and couldn’t stand up for himself.
Hollywood Ending
Since this is a Hollywood script, things resolve in a fantastic way that most of us don’t have access to. However, through hypnosis can get very close to the Hollywood ending! During Regression Therapy Hypnosis. you are guided back in time to the younger you, and you are able to realign the story so that it works for you and your life – rather than against you.
You may be thinking, ”you can’t change the past”, and that is true. Instead, we focus on changing the story we tell ourselves about the past.
Again, you might say, “but isn’t truth an absolute?” That’s a good question – but the answer is, No! Truth is what we believe to be true.
Let’s look at it this way. In the movie, the adversary (played by Catherine Keener) sees things one way. We as the audience tend to side with the “good guys” and see where her ‘truth’ is faulty. This is what happens in hypnosis. We begin to see where our ‘truth’ was faulty.
How Does This Work in Hypnosis?
During hypnosis, I verbally guide my client to a safe place where they can observe what happened in the past, and then, with the help of the adult self, I empower that younger self to create a new story. It takes place very much like in the movie, but without all the guns and action. And very much like the movie, there are often tears of happiness and feelings of peace. Regression Therapy, just like in the movie, changes everything.
Sound intriguing? Great! Watch the movie for more!
