The Science of Epigenetics
I have been going through some ‘stuff’ recently. This has caused some old wounds to resurface. Wounds that I carry as part of me through generations of persecuted ancestors. These wounds manifest in my life as FEAR.
In my family’s case, it is the fear of ‘not enough.’ Not enough food, money, goods, etc. And, because I have been doing great personally, I thought I had eliminated these old fears. Alas, as soon as things began to turn south, I went back north to the old family trauma. This means that I began reacting from a place of fear. Fear of not having enough, not being good enough, and on and on.
Fear Keeps You Stuck
Fear is an issue that I work a great deal on with my clients. It can immobilize us or keep us trying the same tired solutions to problems that didn’t work the first, second, or third times.
That’s how history keeps repeating itself. The thing is, it isn’t just our history, it is generations of history.
Trauma Happens in All Families
Trauma can be handed down through generations. How does this work? The trauma that your grandmother was experiencing when she conceived your mother was then stored in your mother’s eggs. Since women only have one set of eggs in their lifetime (unlike men who are constantly producing new sperm) those eggs now become imprinted with grandma’s trauma. Then, one of those eggs becomes YOU. Along with the color of your skin, eyes, and hair, you also inherit the family trauma.
Therefore, your grandmother inherited trauma from her mother, and her mother from her grandmother, and now you see how trauma keeps passing down the lineage. This is generational trauma, also known as epigenetics.
Epigenetics is real science.
It is not some woo woo mumble jumble.
“Environmental exposures, psychosocial stressors and nutrition are all potentially important influences that may impact health outcomes directly or via interactions with the genome or epigenome over generations. While there have been clear successes in large-scale human genetic studies in recent decades, there is still a substantial amount of missing heritability to be elucidated for complex childhood disorders. Mounting evidence, primarily in animals, suggests environmental exposures may generate or perpetuate altered health outcomes across one or more generations.”

Let’s take a look at one area where so many of us suffer – weight / food issues. We don’t understand this feeling of deprivation that we get when we cut back on food. Food is deeply connected to our feeling safe. If your ancestors went hungry, chances are it is in your DNA to have a fear of not enough food.
If your family has a history of alcoholism, sex abuse, homelessness, lack of finding love, and so much more, chances are you inherited some of that DNA.
